these were taken last weekend when we washed and combed and found some unfortunate surprises lurking in z’s hair. good news though, between my hair cut and the one she got at the salon yesterday, she is good to go. also i didn’t do too bad of a job with the cut. just need sharper scissors the hair doctor (aka stylist) said. i’m not sure if its good or bad that my confidence to cut zelda’s hair has now been boosted. good thing we only do a cut once a year or so.
yesterday morning z and i decided to sew. first up was this strawberry bag. she helped cut out parts of the pattern and then worked the pedal on the machine. we are both very happy with how it turned out.
later we made a skirt. actually i made it as her attention waned, but she’s still awfully cute in it.after that it was off to the craft store dressed matchy matchy – t-shirts, polka dot skirts and bags. oh yes! and the necklaces zelda made for us.
with school starting here in anchorage and elsewhere, i’ve decided to go back to school as well. my first class is today and so starts a two year journey of getting a masters of arts degree in mental disability law. it’s taught by a law school, but not only for lawyers. my classmates may be social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, hospital administrators, really anyone interested in expanding their knowledge in this field, and there are often students from all over the world. i’m excited to get a chance to get a more in depth education in one of my primary practice areas, which isn’t always possible when handling cases and the day to day issues that pop up.
to start the school year off right, i created a space dedicated to my new endeavor, the closet office. what was once chock full of my sewing odds and ends is now a bona fide office. the great things is we were able to create this office with furniture and things we had around the house. the only new addition is the screen door (and maybe a lock) to keep little hands out of the space. i’m really happy how the office turned out and i think it will be a fine space to sit and participate in classes. also, it’s nice to have some of my things put in a space dedicated to them. as you will notice from the photos below, some of my sewing stuff still resides in the office. in fact, my desk is really a sewing table with the machine hidden inside. super handy for when procrastination calls.
also after being out of day care for the end of last week, zelda makes her return to “school” today as well. it’s amazing how going to day care has really enhanced her verbal skills. this little one is talking up a storm, especially in the last four or five days. new words in her repetiteur – thank you, love, zelda, leg, lap, slice, chop, brow (eyebrow), straw (strawberry), berry…and many many more. here she is all set to head back to day care this morning with self selected shoes.
the braids from belize were overdue to be removed, especially when zelda decided to add a handful of pine shavings to her head when we were tending to the baby chicks the other day. who knew it would take four times as long to remove the braids as it took to put them in. it was unbelizeable (ha!, we heard that a lot in belize). good news is watching anita put in zelda’s beads was a good lesson for me and now i can get them to stay in without doing yarn extensions – huge time saver.
for our week or half week’s style we put in four flat rope twists using zig zag parts (papa likes these) and then added some beads because zelda asked for them and i wanted to try out anita’s technique. if this style holds and i think it will, it will probably be put in regular rotation since it was easy to do and the final result looks nice.
and in case you couldn’t tell i got a new photo app and i’m giving it a spin. its a fun way to edit photos on my phone.
