Zelda's first hike

P565

We got out today with the dogs and hiked some of the ski trails after aborting an icy and car sliding attempt to head into the mountains without studs or snow tires.

Zelda was bundled up and slept through the hour long hike. She really seems to like the front carrier. The dogs were excited for the attention & time outside. We were also glad to enjoy the outdoors some more before the snow flies.

Berry picking

(download)

Fall is in the air, so that means its time to go berry picking.  Yesterday we took a family hike to Ptarmigan Valley, a place we discovered last year.  You can definitely see signs of fall, especially as you gain elevation.

Northern Schoofs Reunion

Zach and I spent last weekend in Juneau visiting with Tony and his family.  The visit was awesome.  We had a great time, enjoying beautiful weather, gold panning, hiking, visiting the Alaskan Brewing Company and trying to beat the Pandemic (unfortunately we didn't beat it this time).

We even expanded the Schoofs presence in Alaska a little further with a call to Zach's parents and learned they made the exact same thing for dinner that we made.  Apparently that day the Schoof's stars were aligned.

We took Connor on a hike on Sunday where we ran into a small black bear cub.  Connor was a pro and kept his calm.  We were able to move on past without incident.  Sorry no picture, but we decided to just keep moving and not stop for pictures.  We look forward to having family close and to having them to Anchorage some time soon.

Ptarmigan Valley and Roundtop

Zach and I went for a hike yesterday.  We took the whole family - Honey, Frodo and Darby (aka Fatty).  In all we hiked about 10 miles roundtrip and gained about 4000 feet in elevation.  Several times during the hike, I certainly considered turning back and Darby laid down along the side of the trail many times and took lots of encouragement to keep going.  There were long up hill sections that just didn't seem like they would end.  But, about 2 1/2 hours later, we opened into a gorgeous valley ablaze in fall colors.  Also there were alpine blueberries as far as the eye could see.

Today, my ankle hurts and Darby can barely walk.  Nonetheless, we'll be back to this spot, likely next fall with a tent and buckets so we can pick blueberries to our hearts' content.
