A day in the life

P110

As my family leave draws to an end with only a week left to go, I decided I'd keep track of what Zelda and I did today. The good news is that Zach and I've decided I will only go back to work part-time. So, today is probably a good indication of what our life will be like while I am trying to work part-time and care for Zelda. I get to start out gently though with Zach staying home about 2 days per week working from home so that I can work at the office part-time without Zelda for a couple of months. Of course, once his leave is over, we'll have to go to the office more, but those days aren't that different than today, just a different location.

2011: The year in review

2011 was a big year for our family with the addition of Zelda in September.  After an initial trip to Dallas in August to meet our birth mom and test whether we could survive the Texas heat, we headed south again over Labor Day weekend and then awaited her arrival.  She showed up right on time and we spent the next couple of weeks getting to know each other before we all returned to Alaska as a family of three.

Of course with the addition of a baby, our fall and winter have been filled with firsts for Zelda.  Her first Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We also made a quick trip back to Iowa so that she could meet most of her extended family and attend Zach's cousin's wedding.

All in a day's work

P509

Zelda & I spent the majority of the day working at the office. We got started off right with a bottle & coffee.

P511

Zelda then had a meeting with her doll while I caught up on emails.

Fall fun!

P184

Once we got settled back in here at home, we jumped right into fall.  We carved a pumpkin and Zach decided to do a techy spin on halloween with the mac-o-latern.

Happy Lovers Day!

Dsc09252

Here at patriotic and romantic, we don't celebrate non-patriotic romantic holidays (so says Zach) but instead find ways to be romantic everyday.  I know, puke, sickeningly sweet isn't it. :)

Regardless its another good excuse to get each other little gifts and cards. The past couple of years we've both lucked out in finding just the perfect cards.

Zach gave me this one last year:

And I found this one for him this year:

We hope your days are filled with love and romance everyday as well.

Christmas Tree Bonfire

Dsc08983

Zach and I were invited over to friends' home last night to have a bonfire.  They decided to burn their christmas tree in lieu of recycling it.  As ours was "planted" in the front yard waiting for a trip to the recyclers, we decided to make a pie and strap the tree to the top of the car and head out for a night of fiery fun.

As you can see, the tree once lit went up fast and we didn't end up needing the can of gas that was standing by.

It was nice to be outside with the warm fire.  Also the needles when they burned put on quite the show, shooting up into the air.

Our city farm

Zach and I have been busy keeping bees, chickens and garden starts.  Zach cleaned out the greenhouse yesterday (it was housing an extra motorcycle) and the salsa garden - purple and green tomatillos, hot wax peppers and jalapenos - was moved in along with some large pots containing different newly planted seeds that will hopefully germinate with the added heat.  Today we need to get some of our garden starts into new homes, either in the ground or a raised bed of some sort as they are quickly exceeding the space of their start up containers.

Busy...

Zach and I have been busy with work and house projects.  Here's a quick update:

All of the easy to get to wallpaper is down in the kitchen and the walls have been painted.  Now we're working on getting rid of the hideous yellow trim.

The garden continues to grow and we were able to finally get some of the starts outside the last two days to start to harden them off.  Unfortunately, the weather doesn't seem to be cooperating again today.

We were also able to relocate the chickens back outside.  Yeah, we get our garage back!

Fall Update

Zach and I have had a whirlwind fall and can't believe its already the end of October.  Here are the highlights.

We received two new chickens in August from my coworker in Fairbanks.  One is a buff orpington and the other is a silver wyandotte.  We also came to the realization that our long term bird, the barred rock, is a rooster.  We've debated on whether the rooster will become dinner and on Saturday Honey almost made that decision for us when Zach let her out with the chickens in the yard.  But, that rooster is a tough old bird and has survived.  Honey managed to do a bit of damage to its leg, but he can still walk and seems to be working hard on recovery.  I've also upgraded the coop for the chickens adding a new better feeder and waterer and some roosting areas.

Also, as most of you know, Zach's gram, Bunny, turned 90, which necessitated a trip back to Iowa.  For Zach it was a quick 4 day turn around.  For me, I stayed in the lower 48 visiting Denver and the southwest for almost 2 weeks.  Zach then returned to Iowa again since my sister was getting married.  He had the arduous task of being the photographer and I, his lovely assistant.  Together we took over 2700 pictures and now the real fun begins with culling through them for the gems.

Other than that, fall has fallen, and surprisingly still no snow.  We're continuing to clean up the yard for winter and work on indoor remodeling projects when we have time.  For the most part, our jobs are keeping us very busy and we're trying to get outside as much as possible.

Until next time...
