Fall Colors & the First Annual Zaletel Honey Harvest

(download)

Fall is here.  The leaves are changing colors and dropping to the ground.  We're actually lucking out this fall, it's not been rainy so we've been able to enjoy the crisp temps and fall colors more than the typical two weeks.  Yes, the weather has been like this for about four weeks now.  That's made for some beautiful sunsets along Turnagain Arm.  I love when the mountains glow purple.  It almost makes the loss of daylight worth it (that's obviously the season talking, in a few months I'll be wishing for the long days again).

Our city farm

Zach and I have been busy keeping bees, chickens and garden starts.  Zach cleaned out the greenhouse yesterday (it was housing an extra motorcycle) and the salsa garden - purple and green tomatillos, hot wax peppers and jalapenos - was moved in along with some large pots containing different newly planted seeds that will hopefully germinate with the added heat.  Today we need to get some of our garden starts into new homes, either in the ground or a raised bed of some sort as they are quickly exceeding the space of their start up containers.

Z's Bees

We got our bees today, 5lbs. of them.  Installation into the hive went well with only a single bee sting.  Zach was the bravest of all and dumped the bees into the hive.  I helped and tried to get used to having the bees on me.  Lots of pictures are available here.

As you can see from the video, I also gave Zach lots of advice on how to get them out from the carrier into the hive.
