making our world go ’round: delighting in the season

December 12, 2014 by meg | 0 comments

we are doing our best to embrace the holiday season and winter.  the snow isn’t great, which has dampened our spirits a bit, but that doesn’t mean we’re not finding other ways to have fun.  tonight its cookie decorating, going for a ride on a moose and taking a driving tour of christmas lights. and its time to get zelda from school so our adventures can begin!

here are a few things we found delight in this week:
hugs for the ornamentskissing her ornament counting the daysa 3 year old’s excitement for christmas is hard to beatno excuse not to skatea lake already cleared for us to go ice skating and only a block from the house!IMGP8317.jpgIMGP8334.jpgIMGP8351.jpgIMGP8353.jpgsoup on cold nights and the goofiness that accompanies dinner most nights. we even love the negotiations about how many pieces of candy she gets from the advent calendar because we know there’s only one there and we got her to finish her soup in order to get it!

this weekend we finally got some snow, actually we got a lot of snow, probably about 7 inches. zelda was very excited about it and couldn’t wait to get out so we took a short adventure into the woods yesterday afternoon, but not before her and papa made some delicious banana nut muffins.

zelda loved her her snow pants for this year, which is great since we are planning for her to spend a good amount of time in them now that it will be more enjoyable to get back out for our afternoon walks or skis.IMGP9744-1600.JPGIMGP9747-1600.JPGi forget how quiet the snow can make everything. it’s a nice change after the blustery fall we had. also, its so light out with all of the white even though the sun won’t be up until just before 9 a.m.IMGP9772-1600.JPGIMGP9782-1600.JPGIMGP9788-1600.JPG

we’ll be enjoying tasty fall treats like the pumpkin donuts above, this ice cream (just papa, i’m still off ice cream, maybe a taste for zelda) and this soup.

we’ll leave you with these videos to tide you over until we’re back here next week. enjoy!

making our world go ’round

we lucked out and had a four day weekend for our labor day weekend. here are the highlights of a good weekend:

cooking lots from this cook book.

putting new beads in zelda’s hair – circles and squares.

zach was our head butcher and one of our chickens ended up in the stew pot. she was a tough old bird, but that isn’t necessarily what you want in a chicken that you’re going to eat. next time we cook up one of our chickens we either need to decide to do so when its younger or plan a recipe where it can stew all day.

watching this little friendship bloom. these two are the cutest together and before never really played much together when our families would get together. we hold this family very dear as they were some of the first friends we made when we moved here. watching these kids love each other is really special.

all that new friendship took place sunday up in hatcher’s pass where we spent a beautiful, but soggy day.

winter crops are planted and a cover is on the greenhouse. however, we’re having some pretty strong winds so we’ll see if it lasts.

some serious puddle splashing that resulted in needing a bath and a change of clothes.

checking out the new playground across the street.

some baking with our own rhubarb. after finding our large plant didn’t make it this year we put in three smaller plants. each has produced some, but the one in the back yard looks like it may grow up to be a big producer like we’ve had in year’s past. first zach and zelda made this rhubarb bread and then we made a rhubarb pear blackberry pie on monday.

and finally, learning our really good friends welcomed a baby boy on august 31st. it will be nice to have a baby to snuggle soon.

making our world go ’round

a successful dipnetting trip with 37 fish netted by zach.  zelda even got in on the cleaning action, sitting on my back and watching over my shoulder.  zelda’s comment when seeing me pull the guts from a fish “yum!”  as you can see there’s nothing glamourous about dipnetting.  unattractive waders and being covered in guts.  zelda stayed mostly above the fray, but did manage to eat and get sand everywhere.

how we transported the cakes. the large cake weighed a ton, may 50-70 pounds? i know there’s about 30 pounds of icing on the cake.

final set up of last weekend’s wedding cakes.

garden in full bloom and a vegetable garden that is outgrowing the beds.

the end of the blooms on our potted succulent.

zelda as great and silly as ever.  she’s a lot of fun right now.  she’s also a handful right now.  guess the two go hand in hand.

IMGP7904-1600.JPG

zelda is obsessed with driving and cars right now. ever time we see a motorized vehicle of any type its “vroom vroom.”

being silly after a bath in what we call her old man pants. she pulls them way up over her belly.

we are off to denver tonight for zach’s brother’s wedding this weekend.  we are making 5, yes 5, wedding cakes.  most of the cakes are baked and packed safely in a fish box for transport.  keep your fingers crossed this works.  otherwise it will be a frantic week of baking cakes at high altitude no less.   in addition to zach’s whole clan, i’m also excited that my sister and her family will be able to come and join us.  while we were originally planning to visit our grandmother, at least we can still see each other.
