The march of progress in the kitchen...

As was pounded into my head as a youngster, what would Labor Day weekend be without copious amounts of manual labor? (thanks Mom and Dad!)

Meg and I worked to continue our efforts to eradicate drop ceilings in our living space.  We removed the remaining drop ceiling tiles, lighting and structure without too many gouging mishaps, only to find ourselves without sufficient light in the kitchen to do much.  The land of midnight sun has once again become the land of day and night, as we lose roughly five minutes of daylight each and every day as we approach the equinox.  Yes, we'd become dependent upon the 2x4' fluorescent box light.  Since we tend to spend a bit of time in the kitchen, a new light was in order.

Our city farm

Zach and I have been busy keeping bees, chickens and garden starts.  Zach cleaned out the greenhouse yesterday (it was housing an extra motorcycle) and the salsa garden - purple and green tomatillos, hot wax peppers and jalapenos - was moved in along with some large pots containing different newly planted seeds that will hopefully germinate with the added heat.  Today we need to get some of our garden starts into new homes, either in the ground or a raised bed of some sort as they are quickly exceeding the space of their start up containers.

Z's Bees

We got our bees today, 5lbs. of them.  Installation into the hive went well with only a single bee sting.  Zach was the bravest of all and dumped the bees into the hive.  I helped and tried to get used to having the bees on me.  Lots of pictures are available here.

As you can see from the video, I also gave Zach lots of advice on how to get them out from the carrier into the hive.

Busy...

Zach and I have been busy with work and house projects.  Here's a quick update:

All of the easy to get to wallpaper is down in the kitchen and the walls have been painted.  Now we're working on getting rid of the hideous yellow trim.

The garden continues to grow and we were able to finally get some of the starts outside the last two days to start to harden them off.  Unfortunately, the weather doesn't seem to be cooperating again today.

We were also able to relocate the chickens back outside.  Yeah, we get our garage back!

House Tour 2010

An updated house tour, a year later. As you'll see some things have changed and others are in progress.  Here's the link to last year's video, if you care to compare and here's a link to photos of house projects.

We're gearing up for spring here, although we still have at least 2 more months of snow. We can tell it's getting lighter out; we both woke up before 8am on Saturday and Sunday. That's a sure sign that summer is on its way.
