The march of progress in the kitchen...

As was pounded into my head as a youngster, what would Labor Day weekend be without copious amounts of manual labor? (thanks Mom and Dad!)

Meg and I worked to continue our efforts to eradicate drop ceilings in our living space.  We removed the remaining drop ceiling tiles, lighting and structure without too many gouging mishaps, only to find ourselves without sufficient light in the kitchen to do much.  The land of midnight sun has once again become the land of day and night, as we lose roughly five minutes of daylight each and every day as we approach the equinox.  Yes, we'd become dependent upon the 2x4' fluorescent box light.  Since we tend to spend a bit of time in the kitchen, a new light was in order.

Berry picking

Fall is in the air, so that means its time to go berry picking.  Yesterday we took a family hike to Ptarmigan Valley, a place we discovered last year.  You can definitely see signs of fall, especially as you gain elevation.

Northern Schoofs Reunion

Zach and I spent last weekend in Juneau visiting with Tony and his family.  The visit was awesome.  We had a great time, enjoying beautiful weather, gold panning, hiking, visiting the Alaskan Brewing Company and trying to beat the Pandemic (unfortunately we didn't beat it this time).

We even expanded the Schoofs presence in Alaska a little further with a call to Zach's parents and learned they made the exact same thing for dinner that we made.  Apparently that day the Schoof's stars were aligned.

We took Connor on a hike on Sunday where we ran into a small black bear cub.  Connor was a pro and kept his calm.  We were able to move on past without incident.  Sorry no picture, but we decided to just keep moving and not stop for pictures.  We look forward to having family close and to having them to Anchorage some time soon.

An expanded flock

Tonight we picked up three more lovely ladies to add to our coop.  They are Red Star Reds.  Let's hope they survive the night with the other two.  The silver and buff were pecking on them a bit.

A to Z

A great little anniversary gift from a friend.  What a clever idea!

Here are some "A 2 Z" family pictures from the recent trip back to Iowa.  More here.

To McCarthy, and beyond

Meg and I took a short road trip for the holiday weekend and to celebrate our first (!?) anniversary.  Not sure where the past year has gone so quickly, other than trips to Eagle (AK), Iowa, a quick tour of the southwest (Meg), Iowa, Hawaii (Meg), Costa Rica.  I suppose when you add various points in between, as well as quality time spent here at home in Anchorage, you would probably add it all up to one year.

Meg made us a patriotic and romantic cherry pie as a an anniversary celebration dessert after we arrived home.

Anyway, to the activities of this past weekend.

When the cows to come home

Yep, that's when Zach will again post on our joint blog, even after many requests from our loyal readers (hi, parents) for him to do so.

Since that's the case, here's the quick run down:

1. We've been remodeling the kitchen and landscaping the yard.  As you can see, the cabinets are now white and the walls are now blue.  We decided after much hemming and hawing that we'd just update what we had and put further remodeling aspirations on hold for a while.  But we do need to do something about the gaping hole in the ceiling at some point.  The landscaping added some trees and bushes to the front yard.

Our city farm

Zach and I have been busy keeping bees, chickens and garden starts.  Zach cleaned out the greenhouse yesterday (it was housing an extra motorcycle) and the salsa garden - purple and green tomatillos, hot wax peppers and jalapenos - was moved in along with some large pots containing different newly planted seeds that will hopefully germinate with the added heat.  Today we need to get some of our garden starts into new homes, either in the ground or a raised bed of some sort as they are quickly exceeding the space of their start up containers.
